NFL Player Blows Whistle on Insurer

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (CN) - A pro football player called a personal foul on Celtic Insurance Company. Roger Allen III claims the Celtic Group refused to cover the hernia surgery he needed to compete for a slot on the St. Louis Rams.

Allen underwent the surgery on Feb. 11, 2009, recovered fully and earned a spot on the Rams roster for the 2009 season, according to his complaint in Madison County Court.

Allen says the surgery was not experimental, was reasonable and necessary and should have been covered through his policy with Celtic.

Allen says he suffered $15,000 to $50,000 in damages due to Celtic's failure to pay. He is represented by Michael Glisson with Williamson, Webster & Falb of Alton, Ill.

The Rams signed Allen as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2009. Allen is now on the New Orleans Saints' practice squad.
