PHILADELPHIA (CN) - The NFL agreed to pay $765 million to settle lawsuits from thousands of former players who accused it of concealing the dangers of brain injuries to profit from the violent sport.
The settlement, if approved by a federal judge, would come to less than 8 percent of the National Football League's estimated $10 billion in annual revenue.
More than 4,000 former players had joined dozens of lawsuits filed all over the country, alleging the NFL for decades concealed the risks of concussions, repeated concussions and other brain injuries.
U.S. District Judge Anita Brody in July ordered the NFL and plaintiffs' representatives to meet with a mediator, retired Federal Judge Layn Phillips, who announced the proposed settlement Thursday.
Judge Brody and the plaintiffs have yet to agree to the settlement.
