NFL Linebacker Says ‘All Natural’ Pill|Got Him Barred For Illegal Substance

NEWARK (CN) - New Orleans Saints linebacker Jamar Nesbit says he was suspended for four games because he took Balanced Health Products' "all natural diet supplement" StarCaps, which contained bumetanide a substance banned by the NFL. Nesbit says the drug is not listed on the label.

Nesbit also sued the company's president, Nikki Haskell, who appears in its ads. He says the defendants push StarCaps as an "all natural diuretic" whose active ingredients include papaya and garlic. They do not admit that the product contains bumetanide, a "prescription strength diuretic" banned by the NFL, Nesbit says.

He says that after he failed a random drug test on July 28, he took five bottles of StarCaps to a lab for testing, and they all contained the undisclosed substance, bumetanide. And he says the lab informed him that the Journal of Analytic Toxicology had identified bumetanide in StarCaps in 2007.

Nesbit demands punitive damages for fraud, misrepresentation, deceptive trade and negligence. He is represented in Federal Court by Brian Molloy with Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer of Woodbridge.
