Newspaper/Broadcast Ownership

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Federal Communication Commission has gotten rid of most of the 32-year-old prohibition on newspaper/broadcast cross ownership.

The prohibition was based on the belief that newspapers and broadcast stations under the same ownership was not in the public interest. Previously the Commission's rules presumed that newspaper/broadcast cross ownership was allowed only in the largest markets and only where there were numerous media voices and competition. Starting March 24, the Commission's presumption will be that a proposed newspaper-broadcast transaction is not inconsistent with the public interest if it meets certain criteria.
