PHILADELPHIA (CN) - In the continuing fight over the fate of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News - or their pieces - The Newspaper Guild sued the newspapers' latest owners, seeking, among other things, the right to bid for the newspapers if they are auctioned off.
The Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia sued Intertrust, H.F. Lenfest and Interstate General Media, seeking leave to intervene, in the Court of Common Pleas.
The Guild and its 550 local members say they have seen five different groups buy and sell the newspapers since 2005.
Multiple lawsuits in recent months has resulted in "paralysis of the company's operations," the Guild says in the 9-page lawsuit.
Lenfest and Interstate General Media (IGM) have filed a petition for dissolution of the ownership group (IGM) and a public sale of the company's assets.
This makes clear that "the survivability of the company and its longstanding legacy newspapers is in jeopardy, and the jobs of approximately 550 Guild members are at stake," according to the complaint.
It continues: Accordingly, to protect its interests, the interests of its approximately 550 members, and the continuing survivability and viability of a Philadelphia institution - the Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com - the Guild seeks to intervene in this action. The Guild seeks to request an auction of the company's assets, through a public auction, and/or the right to participate in the bidding process as a potential purchaser in any private auction."
