ST. LOUIS (CN) - A longtime television news anchor who accused the IRS of "hammering him" after he interviewed President Barack Obama is off the air until further notice.
KMOV anchorman Larry Conners made the accusation on his Facebook page on Monday. Conners claimed that he had initially deemed it coincidental that his issues with the Internal Revenue Service arose shortly after his 2012 interview with Obama. The recent IRS scandal then made him worry that he was unfairly targeted.
KMOV news director Sean McLaughlin told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Conners wasn't being suspended, but that the station is "looking into the situation and weighing" its options.
Under pressure, Conners backtracked in a televised statement at the end of Tuesday's newscast. During the statement, he disclosed that his issues with the IRS preceded the Obama interview.
A federal lien has been placed on Conners' property, the Post-Dispatch reported. The lien claims that Conners and his wife owe more than $85,000 in small business/self-employed taxes.
Conners has been a St. Louis mainstay since 1975 and has the reputation of a no-nonsense, hard-nosed interviewer. He has won five Emmy awards for exceptional news coverage.
