WASHINGTON (CN) - Donald Trump's foundation must stop fundraising in New York because it is not properly registered to receive donations, the state's attorney general announced Monday.
The notice of violation, sent to the Donald J. Trump Foundation Friday, supports a Washington Post report that last week said the foundation was not properly registered to receive donations in New York State.
"Please take further notice that the Trump Foundation must immediately cease soliciting contributions or engaging in any other fundraising activities in New York," the notice reads.
The Trump Foundation has 15 days to provide the Charities Bureau with its registration information or risk being labeled a "continuing fraud upon the people of the state of New York," according to the two-page notice released publically Monday.
"Based on information received by the Charities Bureau to date, the Trump Foundation was engaged in solicitation or fundraising activities in New York State in 2015, is not and was not registered with the Charities Bureau pursuant to Article 7-A, and was thus not permitted to engage in such activity during this period," says the notice from James Sheehan, chief of the attorney general's Charities Bureau .
It also must turn over information it should have filed in years past.
The notice also warns that filing inaccurate information on the registration forms carries the penalty of perjury.
Trump's personal foundation, to which he has reportedly not given since 2008, has been a persistent headache for the Republican presidential candidate following a series of reports from The Washington Post.
The paper reported Trump used foundation money to make a contribution to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who dropped an investigation into Trump University soon after. Trump also reportedly bought a six-foot tall picture of himself with foundation money, as well as a football helmet signed by former University of Florida football star Tim Tebow.
N.Y. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman last month confirmed his office was looking into the Trump Foundation.
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment Monday afternoon.
