New U.S. Att. in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (CN) - Richard Callahan is the new U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri. President Barack Obama nominated Callahan in September 2009 and he was sworn in Friday by Chief Judge Catherine D. Perry.

Callahan succeeds Michael W. Reap, who was appointed interim U.S. attorney in April 2009.

Callahan, 62, has been a circuit judge for the 19th Judicial Circuit of Missouri since 2003. He earned his law degree from Georgetown University, spent 14 years as an assistant prosecutor and special prosecutor and 16 years as an elected prosecutor before serving as a judge.

In 2009, Callahan was named attorney of the year by the Missouri Lawyer's Weekly.
