MANHATTAN (CN) - Avrum David Friesel was arrested in London Tuesday on an 11-year-old warrant charging him with defrauding the U.S. government of tens of millions of dollars in government programs allegedly to benefit the upstate village of New Square.
The 64-count indictment claims Friesel and six coconspirators created fraudulent entities to get money from Pell Grants, the Small Business Administration, the Section 8 program, and the Social Security Administration.
Four people were convicted of federal fraud charges in 1999, and a fifth was extradited from Israel and pleaded guilty, the U.S. Attorney's Office here said. Friesel is in a London jail, awaiting a bail hearing on May 7.
