New Fla. Judges Ordered for Overburdened Courts

(CN) - The Florida Supreme Court ruled that the Sunshine State needs to establish 80 new judgeships.

The total breaks down to 26 at the circuit court level and 54 at the county court level.

Noting the current economy, the court said fulfilling this order may prove difficult.

"With over 1 million Floridians unemployed and significant deficits in the state budget, we recognize that funding new judgeships will compete with other critical state priorities," the unsigned decision states. "Nonetheless, the reality is that Florida's circuit and county judges are overloaded with new filings, have substantial caseloads and have fewer support staff to assist with the disposition of cases."

"We respectfully urge that the legislature consider the priority of maintaining adequate funding for the courts which provide justice for the people of Florida," the ruling continues.
