BERLIN (AP) — France and Germany have buried the hatchet over differences on new European rules that could complicate plans for a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, agreeing to a compromise that would regulate but not threaten the politically sensitive project.
Ambassadors of EU countries meeting in Brussels on Friday gave the go-ahead to a tweaked proposal that sets the scene for negotiations with European Parliament and European Commission on extending the bloc's rules regulating gas deliveries to incoming pipelines, like Nord Stream 2.
The Russian-German pipeline is being built under the Baltic to deliver Russian gas directly to Germany, for further distribution across Europe.
Once finalized, experts say the regulations would mean Russia's Gazprom would have to follow EU regulations on the pipeline, and will not be able to be its sole operator.
