New Courthouse to Honor Chief Judge Slain in Ariz.

(CN) - Congress approved a measure Wednesday to name a courthouse in Yuma, Ariz., after the late Chief Judge John M. Roll, who was killed in the recent Tucson shooting.

Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl had introduced the bill in the Senate on Jan. 26. The measure passed by unanimous consent on Feb. 1 and went to the House of Representatives.

House members passed the bill 429-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The vote results from the House show that five members did not participate in vote. Among those five is Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was the presumed target of the alleged Tucson shooter, Jared Loughner.

Roll was one of six killed in the Jan. 8 shooting at an open meeting for Giffords in a Safeway parking lot. More than a dozen others were shot or injured that day, including Giffords who survived being shot in the head at close range.

Media reports indicate that Roll had advocated the construction of the new Arizona courthouse, and that construction is slated to begin in July.
