Nevada Stings Tire Shop Chain

LAS VEGAS (CN) - Nevada's Attorney General wants to shut down a Las Vegas tire repair chain for selling unnecessary repairs. The state asked that Tire Works Total Car Care be dissolved and banned from doing business in Nevada.

The lawsuit capped a 3-year undercover operation in which Nevada officials got fake license plates and registration documents from the DMV, placed them on surplus unmarked police vehicles and took them to some of the 13 Total Car Care shops in Las Vegas.

Although a state official examined the cars beforehand and determined that they were not in need of repair, mechanics at Total Car Care recommended the cars be serviced, the lawsuit states.

The attorney general says her office has received at least 23 complaints from consumers about Total Car Care's business practices.

The state seeks thousands of dollars in penalties. Also named as defendant is Morpheus Investment, which does business as Tire Works.
