Navy Settles Claims It Violated Enviro Rules

(CN) - The U.S. Navy will pay $83,900 to settle claims it unlawfully discharged ozone-depleting substances at the Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia.

In a written statement released May 6, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the settlement will help reduce potentially harmful discharges of ozone-depleting substances and ensure the safe storage and disposal of hazardous waste at the base.

The agency says the Navy failed to perform leak rate calculations when it services air conditioning units at the base, and that it violated emissions limits on an industrial device used for abrasive blasting and also had recordkeeping violations.

Both of these were violations of the Clean Air Act, and the EPA said the Navy has already addressed both issues.

In addition, the Navy was said to violate the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. which pertains to the environmentally-sound storage and disposal of hazardous waste.

Again, the EPA said, the Navy took prompt action to address the hazardous waste violations.
