Navajo Says Deputy Brutalized Him

ALBUQUERQUE (CN) - "Do you want to go to jail or just take a beating?" That's what Bernalillo County Sheriff's Deputy Phred Dixon asked Delvin Bates, a Navajo, after arresting him for no reason but racial animus, Bates claims in Federal Court. He says Dixon drove him "to a remote hilly area," where he kicked him, beat him with a club and with the car door, while Bates was handcuffed, then abandoned him.He says the sheriff fired Dixon, from whom he seeks punitive damages. See complaint.
