Nationwide Recall|of Whole Foods Roquefort

(CN) - Citing possible bacterial contamination, Whole Foods Market announced a nationwide recall of pungent Roquefort blue cheese stamped "Papillon Organic."

Selling for nearly $20 a pound, Whole Foods packaged the recalled cheese in clear plastic wrap and a scale label. The PLUC code for this product begins with 029536, and all sell-by dates are affected.

Though Whole Foods has not received any reports of illnesses or infections, it said Wednesday that the cheese in question "has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes."

Food and Drug Administration employees found the Listeria bacteria during routine sampling of a whole, uncut wheel of the cheese, Whole Foods said in a statement.

The Listeria bacteria "can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems."

Healthy individuals may develop only short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea or diarrhea, but an infection could cause pregnant women to miscarry.

Whole Foods has posted signage on store shelves to notify customers of the recall, and it says it has removed all affected product from the shelves.

Consumers who have purchased this product from Whole Foods are entitled to a full refund with a copy of receipt.
