WASHINGTON (CN) - Yogi and other bears may sleep more soundly this year as the National Park Service plans to limit the number of snowmobiles that may enter Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons National Monument.
In September U.S. District Court Judge Emmett Sullivan blocked a Bush administration proposal to allow more than 500 snowmobiles a day into the parks. The judge found that the increase would violate the fundamental legal responsibility of the park service to protect the clean air, wildlife, and natural quiet of the parks for the benefit of all visitors.
Under the new regulations, 318 snowmobiles a day would be allowed in the park under the direct supervision of guides trained to minimize their impact on wildlife. Each machine also would have to be certified to meet stringent sound and pollution requirements.
