MANHATTAN (CN) - U.S. District Judge Schira Schiendlin has refused Unocal's request to remove the Orange County Water District's MTBE lawsuit to state court. The multidistrict litigation combining more than 100 actions across the nation brought claims against oil companies for their use and handling of methyl tertiary butyl ether, a carcinogen added to gasoline that leaks through storage tanks and contaminates water.
