Mother Gets Life in Prison for Killing Baby

HOUSTON (CN) - A Houston woman was sentenced to life in prison for killing her 2-month-old son by burying him alive.

Jurors convicted 32-year-old Narjes Modarresi of capital murder after deliberating for two hours.

Modarresi first told investigators that two men had kidnapped her son in April 2010 while she was walking him in a stroller, according to the Houston Chronicle.

She later confessed and led detectives to her son's grave.

Modarresi has been diagnosed as bipolar. In arguing for a lighter sentence, her attorney George Parnham said she was suicidal when she buried her son.

The baby's father said Modarresi's sentence of life in prison without parole is too harsh.

"If she is really sick and everything, which I think she is, she should not spend her life in prison," Amir Golabbakhsh told KHOU, Houston's CBS affiliate.

Parnham told reporters he will appeal the sentence.
