LEROY, Ill. (CN) - A tiny central Illinois town will pay $1.2 million to a woman who claims police failed to protect her two young sons from their father, who killed them in 2009.
Amy Leichtenberg sued the city of LeRoy in 2010.
LeRoy, pop. 3,585, is 175 miles northeast of St. Louis.
Leichtenberg claimed LeRoy police didn't take seriously her fears about her ex-husband, and waited 26 hours before issuing an Amber Alert.
The boys - Duncan, 9, and Jack, 7 - were missing for three weeks before they were found dead in the back seat of their father's car. Investigators believe their father, Michael Connolly, killed his sons before killing himself.
The Pantagraph, a daily newspaper serving the Bloomington-Normal area, reported details of the mother's settlement through a Freedom of Information Act request.
LeRoy admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement, which prohibits attorneys and people connected with the case from discussing it.
