WASHINGTON (CN) - The National Marine Fisheries Service has stopped trophy fishing for Atlantic bluefin tuna for the year, except in the Gulf of Mexico, because it believes the quota for large fish has been reached.
The quota for fish larger than 73 inches is 2.9 metric tons.
In addition to closing fishing for tuna greater than 73 inches, the service has reduced the allowable catch to one tuna between 27 and 59 inches per charter boat per day and one between 47 and 59 inches per day, until the end of the year.
Private boats with angling permits are allowed to land one tuna between 27 and 59 inches per day.
The world-wide fishery of the Atlantic blue fin tuna is in decline, and catch is limited by the Atlantic Tunas Convention Act and the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
