Morgan Lewis Nabs Troubled Firm’s Partners

LOS ANGELES (CN) - Powerhouse law firm Morgan Lewis voted Friday to admit 227 partners from the troubled Boston firm Bingham McCutchen.

Morgan Lewis approved the transfer Bingham McCutchen was hit with a decline in revenues in 2013. The firm has hemorrhaged 50 partners this year and let 225 lawyers go in the last two, the Boston Globe reported last month.

The lawyers are expected to join the firm before the end of this month, making Morgan Lewis one of the world's largest law firms, Morgan Lewis said in a statement.

A Morgan Lewis spokesman, Elliott Frieder, and Bingham's Claire Papanastasiou declined to comment.

In all, 73 Bingham partners will be left hanging after the other partners leave, the Wall Street Journal reported, and will have to find jobs at other firms.

Talks between the two firms have reportedly been going on for months. But in a news release, Morgan Lewis said the deal was not a merger.

With the influx of new lawyers, Morgan Lewis will have 2,000 lawyers in 28 offices around the world, it said.
