More Efficient Asylum

WASHINGTON (CN) - Petitions for asylum will no longer automatically be sent to the State Department for review after receipt by the U.S. Customs and Immigration Service.

The two agencies agreed that the process of asylum seeking could be streamlined by the State Departments' receiving only those petitions regarding which the service believes the department has country-specific information.

This rule applies to affirmative applications for asylum, which are those submitted by immigrants who are not currently detained at a USCIS center or already in a removal proceeding with the USCIS.
