HOUSTON (CN) - The former postmaster for a military post office in Kuwait was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for stealing $565,000 in money orders, the U.S. Attorney's office said.
Delmus Eugene Scott, 34, of Humble, Texas was sentenced Thursday after he pleaded guilty to theft of government money Jan. 27, federal prosecutors said in a statement.
Scott was a custodian of public effects, the equivalent of a postmaster in the United States, at the Camp Buehring Army Post Office in Kuwait. He worked for a Pentagon contractor that provided postal service to the U.S. military. He had the power to order blank money orders from the U.S. Postal Service.
He was indicted in July 2011 after investigators determined he stole 565 postal money orders, each of them for $1,000, and deposited a total of $191,000 of the stolen funds into his, and his fiancé's bank accounts. Agents recovered another $384,000 in money orders from Scott before he could deposit them.
"The investigation determined Scott mechanically imprinted the fraudulent amounts on the postal money orders using a money order imprinter exclusive to the Camp Buehring APO under his custody and control, misrepresenting that they had been properly paid," prosecutors said in a statement.
Scott was also ordered to pay a $7,500 fine.
