Mom Claims Teachers Made Students Fight

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CN) - New Haven schoolteachers staged a three-round fight between students in a school bathroom, a parent claims in court.

Kyia Dupree and her son Tyron Dupree sued Paul Brock, the teacher who allegedly pulled Tyron out of class on Nov. 30, 2011 and brought him to a bathroom for the fight at the direction of Larry Young, another teacher at James Hillhouse High School.

At about 11:30 a.m. that day, "the defendant, Paul Brock, an employee of James Hillhouse High School, removed the minor plaintiff from class and brought him to a secured bathroom near the gymnasium, per order of the defendant, Larry Young," the lawsuit states.

"At said time and place, the defendant, Larry Young, ordered the plaintiff to engage in a three-round fight with another student."

Tyron suffered an abrasion to his lip, a contusion to his head, an asthma attack, and emotional trauma, his mom says.

She adds: "As a further result of the defendant's wrongful conduct, the minor plaintiff has sustained great pain and suffering, mental anguish, and distress of mind, and these injuries are, or are likely to be, permanent in nature."

Young "locked the minor plaintiff in a bathroom with another student and required the two students to fight one another," the mother claims. She says Brock should have known better than to remove Tyron from class and bring him to Young when he knew or should have known they were going to have to fight.

A local newspaper reported that Brock was put on unpaid leave after the incident and Young, who is a member of a union, was on paid leave.

The Duprees are represented by Alphonse Balzano, in Superior Court.
