HOUSTON (CN) - A pregnant Texan faces misdemeanor charges, accused of putting her 3-year-old son up for adoption on Craigslist with an ad stating: "I'm a single mom and can't do this. Thanks, Desperate."
Stephanie Reddus, 29, of Huffman, was charged with advertising for placement of a child, Houston's ABC affiliate KTRK reported.
Huffman is 30 miles northeast of Houston.
The ad stated: "Hi, I'm trying to adopt out my 3yr old son. I'm not in a good place in my life and don't feel like I can care for him properly but I don't know where to start. If you or know anyone who is interested in caring for him, please let me know. I'm a single mom and can't do this. Thanks, Desperate."
Reddus told police she posted the ad around May 1 because she is depressed and can't take her anxiety medication because she is pregnant, KTRK reported.
"If you're putting it on Craigslist, anybody - the highest bidder or whoever the mother deems appropriate to give the child to - that's where the kid goes," Harris County Assistant District Attorney David Abrams told KTRK. "There's no government regulation on it."
Reddus posted a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court May 21.
