(CN) - University of Missouri President Timothy Wolfe resigned Monday after campus protests over his handling of racial incidents and a boycott threat from football players, according to news reports.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Wolfe's resignation Monday morning, which the newspaper said occurred at an emergency board meeting.
Wolfe said in a statement that the campus community should use his resignation "to heal and start talking again," according to the Post-Dispatch. He also said his "decision to resign comes out of love, not hate," the newspaper reported.
Campus-wide tension began in September when black student Payton Head, who is president of the student government, said he was racially abused while walking.
Since then, a student yelled the N-word at members of the Legion of Black Collegians in a campus plaza and someone smeared feces in the shape of a swastika in a dorm room bathroom, according to an ESPN report.
Some Missouri football players said in a Legion of Black Collegians tweet Saturday night that they would not participate in team activities until Wolfe stepped down.
Last week, Missouri grad student Jonathan Butler began a hunger strike, claiming Wolfe did not respond appropriately to student concerns, according to ESPN.
