JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - The Missouri Supreme Court refused to block the new district map for the state House, but the challengers may fare better in the lower courts.
Bob Johnson, a Republican former lawmaker, told The Associated Press that a lawsuit could be filed in state circuit court as early as today.
The dozen or so plaintiffs filed their compliant with the state's high court on Monday. They claimed the new state House districts should be thrown out because the map violates requirements that districts have similar populations and be contiguous and compact.
In declining their request, the state's high court found that this case "involves disputed issues of fact" that a circuit court should quickly decide, if the plaintiffs continue their challenge on that level.
Earlier this month, the Missouri Supreme Court rejected new state Senate districts and ordered a further legal review of the of the U.S. House districts. The new maps are necessary to reflect the 2010 census.
A resolution to the matter is needed quickly since the month-long filing period for candidates for the August primary and November general elections begins Feb. 28.
