ST. LOUIS (CN) - Missouri is the first state to provide judges with defendant-specific data on how much a particular sentence will cost taxpayers, and the likelihood that the defendant will reoffend.
The data comes from the Missouri Sentence Advisory Commission, which was created to help judges find appropriate sentences.
Judges across the state can go online to consider the cost of a sentence; the information soon may be included in presentence reports. Costs are figured by a formula.
Judges can ignore the data, but supporters hope some judges will use it to consider alternative sentences that may cost less and provide better rehabilitation.
