Missouri Court Fees Could Be Hiked

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Higher court fees could be on the way to get more money for cash-strapped sheriff's departments. A proposed bill would add a $10 fee to court orders such as subpoenas and civil summons. The money would go through the state treasury to the Missouri Sheriff's Association, which would decide which departments will get it.

A state Senate committee suggested the fee as one of several ideas to get more money to sheriff's departments, especially those in rural areas.

A Missouri deputy's average salary is $22,000 and many departments require deputies to pay for equipment and training, the Missouri Deputy Sheriff's Association reported.

Counties in Northern Missouri find it especially difficult to staff departments, because the average pay for deputies in Iowa is $30,000, the Senate Committee's report states.
