Minister's letter voids death penalty

SACRAMENTO — A federal judge vacated the death sentence of Jerry Grant Frye, who was convicted of murdering two people in 1988 during a robbery. A juror in the case asked her minister prior to the penalty phase about what the Bible had to say about the death penalty, and he responded with a written letter seemingly reassuring her that it was acceptable to vote for the death penalty. This was at least at least “possibly prejudicial” to Frye, the judge ruled.
