Mine Rescues

WASHINGTON (CN) - After more than 30 coal miners lost their lives to accidents in 2006, Congress passed an Act to improve mine rescues, and the Labor Department's Mine Safety and Health Administration amended the coal mine rescue training standards.

The new standards include that mine rescue workers must put in 96 hours of refresher training per year, instead of the previous 40, with eight of the hours having to occur every two months; rescue teams must train in each mine they service, and have knowledge of the operations and ventilation at each of the mines; and rescue teams must train for and compete in two realistic mine rescue competitions each year at which they are timed and evaluated.
