Milk Producers With Losses Get $290 Million

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Farm Service Agency has begun sending assistance payments to dairy producers that lost money in 2009, under the Dairy Economic Loss Assistance Payment program.

After milk prices reached a record high, and producers expanded their herds, the prices fell, and then the recession caused a drop in demand.

Eligible farmers are those who produced and marketed milk in the U.S. at some time from February through July 2009. The Farm Service Agency is making benefit payments using the data already reported by dairy operations, according to the agency.
