WASHINGTON (CN) - In Iraq and Afghanistan, the "Made in the U.S.A." label may be seen less often than before, except in the case of small arms contracts.

The Department of Defense plans to allow purchasing officers to waive competition requirements, and discriminate in favor of Iraqi and Afghani suppliers for goods and services used in the two theaters of operation.

The plan is consistent with, and advances, over-all U.S. policy to provide stable employment and business opportunities in both countries, according to the department. Separate trade laws require that the department allow U.S. based manufacturers to compete for all small arms contracts.
