MIAMI (CN) - A union that represents 30,000 teachers claims the Miami-Dade County School Board held an illegal secret meeting on Jan. 30 to discuss how to cut more than $50 million from this year's budget. Florida, which has no state income tax, faces a $2.3 billion budget deficit due to declining real estate tax revenue.
The United Teachers of Dade wants to see the minutes of the meeting. Their complaint in Miami-Dade County Court refers to the meeting once as Jan. 30, 2009 and once as Jan. 30, 2008. Apparently, the meeting was held this year.
The union is represented by Kathleen Phillips.
