WASHINGTON (CN) - A Countrywide employee and another California resident were charged with selling the personal identification of Countrywide Home Loan customers to third parties, the FBI and U.S. Attorney Thomas O'Brien announced.
Rene L. Rebollo Jr., 36, of Pasadena, was arrested by the FBI as part of a security-breach investigation at Countrywide Financial.
As a former senior financial analyst for Countrywide's subprime mortgage division, Rebollo allegedly copied customers' account information onto a flash drive and sold the data to interested parties.
Co-defendant Wahid Siddiqi, 25, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., allegedly sold and delivered personal information to a confidential witness.
Both men were arrested on charges related to the sale of illegally accessed data.
Rebollo is charged with exceeding his access level on a financial institution's computer and faces up to five years in prison. Siddiqi is charged with access fraud and related activity, and could get up to 15 years in prison.
The case was jointly investigated by the FBI and Countrywide Financial.
