Member of Alabama Crew Sues Maersk|For Injuries From Struggle with Pirate

HOUSTON (CN) - A crew member of the Maersk Alabama, whose captain was abducted by Somali pirates during a failed hijacking, has sued Maersk for injuries he says he suffered in a struggle with a pirate in the engine room. Richard Hicks claims Maersk and the Waterman Steamship Corp. knew they were sending employees into "pirate-infested" waters.

Hicks seeks at least $75,000 in damages from Waterman and Maersk. He says the defendants' failure to use ordinary care put the crew in harm's way, and led to his disabling injuries.

He is represented in Harris County Court by Terry Bryant.
