Mel Gibson Pleads No Contest

LOS ANGELES (CN) - Mel Gibson pleaded no contest Friday to misdemeanor battery on his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, and was ordered to spend a year in a domestic violence program and mental health counseling.

The state's misdemeanor complaint claims that "On or about January 6, 2010, in the County of Los Angeles, the crime of battery, in violation of Penal Code Section 243(e)(1), a misdemeanor, was committed by Mel Gibson, who did willfully and unlawfully use force and violence upon the person of Oksana G., a person child's parent."

The case made headlines after tapes of Gibson's abusive rants against Grigorieva were leaked to the media.

The former couple have a 1½-year-old daughter.
