Megabus to Become Wheelchair Friendly

(CN) - Megabus agreed to make its intercity buses completely wheelchair accessible to settle charges under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Justice Department said.

Authorities investigated the bus service last year after a disabled passenger said he was forced out of his wheelchair and was not allowed to use the ramp on a trip from New York to Baltimore. The company agreed to settle.

Under the terms of the settlement, Megabus will ensure all its buses are wheelchair accessible and that passengers with disabilities can make reservations in the same way other passengers do.

The company also will pay a $55,000 penalty to the government and $12,500 in damages to the passenger who filed the complaint.

"Commercial passenger buses are an affordable and growing sector of the transportation industry, and making sure that they are fully accessible to individuals with disabilities is a necessary part of integrating individuals with disabilities into all aspects of American life," attorney Thomas Perez, of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, said in a statement.
