Medicare Sites to Inform|Patients of Visitor Choice

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services plan to revise the Medicare conditions of participation for hospitals and critical access hospitals to ensure the visitation rights of all patients, including those with same-sex partners.

The proposed rule addresses the directives in President Obama's April 15, Memorandum on Hospital Visitation, and adds that the facilities are to "fully inform patients (or their designated representatives) of this right and that all patients are guaranteed full participation in designating who may and who may not visit them," according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Under the proposal, Medicare- and Medicaid-participating hospitals and critical access hospitals would be required to have written policies and procedures regarding the visitation rights of patients, including those describing any clinically necessary or reasonable restriction or limitation that the facility may need to place on such rights as well as the reasons for the clinical restriction or limitation.
