Medicare Patients May|Designate LGBT Visitors

WASHINGTON (CN) - Hospitals and critical access hospitals that care for Medicare and Medicaid patients must have written policies and procedures allowing those patients to designate who will be able to visit them, by Jan. 18.

The rule, issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, implements President Obama's April executive order requiring participating hospitals to allow visitation by gay and lesbian partners at the same level as family.

The new visitation policies must include descriptions of any clinically necessary or reasonable restriction or limitation the hospital may need to place on the rights, and the reasons for the limits.
