ALBUQUERQUE (CN) - A U.S. Marine sued Boeing and Bell Helicopter for injuries he suffered aboard a malfunctioning V-22 Osprey. The $70 million tilt-rotor aircraft that lands and takes off like a helicopter and flies like an airplane, 24 years in development, suffered repeated crashes in development that killed at least 19 Marines.
Lance Cpl. Lawrence Jones says he was discharged from the Marines for medical reasons after he suffered smoke inhalation in the March 30, 2005 crash at Marine Corps Air Station New River, in North Carolina.
Jones demands punitive damages for "reckless and malicious conduct," "utter indifference to and conscious disregard" of his health and welfare, and "willful and wanton conduct" in making the defective aircraft and selling it to the Marines.
He is represented by Richard Marquez.
