Manager Accused of Raining on ‘Rain’ Concert

LOS ANGELES (CN) - A concert promoter demands $30 million from Korean pop star Rain and Star M Entertainment, claiming the management company deliberately sabotaged a June 2007 concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Star M conspired to pull Rain from the show in order to lock him on an extended world tour - a move meant to boost the value of Star M stock, Andrew Kim claims in Superior Court.

Kim says Star M and other Korean entertainment companies orchestrated the concert cancellation just two hours before the scheduled June 10 concert. He claims the cancellation occurred with more than 80 percent of the tickets sold and fans flying in from as far away as Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong to see "the most famous singing artist in Asia."

In 2006, Time magazine named Rain, whose given name is Jeong Ji Hoon, the second most influential artist in the world. He has also appeared in the movie "Speed Racer," and tried to be the first Korean entertainer to successfully cross over to the United States.

Star M allegedly bought the rights to the artist's "Rain's Coming" world tour from his management company, JYP Entertainment, in 2006. Star M then hired Kim to promote and stage the U.S. concert.

Kim says he spent an "enormous amount" of money and time preparing for the concert, but was "left behind holding the bag." He allegedly spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own money paying vendors, and flew to Korea and back more than 25 times from January to July 2007.

He also claims the abrupt cancellation cost him "millions" in potential business opportunities and sponsors, including Sprint, McDonald's, Wal-Mart and Toyota. He adds that he faced several lawsuits and judgments, including one multimillion-dollar judgment.

He is represented by Daniel Park with Lurie & Park.
