Man Pleads Guilty in Mo. Church Shooting

NEOSHO, Mo. (CN) - A man who allegedly killed three and wounded four in a church shooting has accepted a plea deal to avoid the death penalty, Newton County prosecutors said. Prosecutor Jake Skouby told the Joplin Globe that Eiken Elam Saimon accepted the deal for charges brought against him for the Aug. 12, 2007 attack on the First Congregation Church in Neosho.

The plea will put Saimon in prison for the rest of his life. Saimon is also expected to plead guilty to charges of statutory rape and sodomy for a sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl two days before the shootings. Neosho is 170 miles south of Kansas City.
