Man Loses Eye at Cubs’ Farm Team Game

BOISE (CN) - A baseball fan says he lost an eyeball to a line drive foul ball at a Chicago Cubs Class A Minor League ballpark. Bud Rountree says the "false sense of security" created by protective netting at the Boise Hawks' home field contributed to his injury.

Memorial Stadium in Boise, built in 1989, features an area called the "Hawks Nest" for fans who want to watch the game and socialize. Rountree was watching a game with his wife and two grandsons from the Hawks Nest. He says the mesh netting over the elevated dining area and the management's choice of circular dining tables and chairs rather than typical stadium seating gave a false sense of security that fans are from foul balls.

In his complaint in Ada County Court, Rountree said he was facing away from the field when he heard a "commotion." He turned his head toward the field and was knocked to his knees by a blow "directly in the socket of his right eye."

Rountree lost his eye and has to wear an "ocular prosthesis." He seeks $2 million for negligence, recklessness, medical expenses, pain and suffering, embarrassment and humiliation. He is represented by Breck Seiniger.
