Man Defrauded Sept. 11 Fund Of $1 Million

MANHATTAN (CN) - A New Jersey man was sentenced to 30 months for defrauding the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund of more than $1 million. Mario Mastellone, 42, of East Windsor, falsely claimed that he was totally disabled by the attacks. Prosecutors said it is the largest fraud claim ever against the Sept. 11 fund.

Evidence included a video that showed Mastellone dancing the limbo and carrying a woman on his back during a 2002 wedding, and shoveling snow, washing his car and moving garbage cans in 2005. He also worked as a painter after he allegedly was disabled.

The Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund is administered by the Justice Department.
