Man Claims He Owns Chief Illiniwek

URBANA, ILL. (CN) - In response to protests from native Americans, the University of Illinois agreed to stop using "Chief Illiniwek" as its mascot. Now Jack Davis has sued the University in Federal Court, saying he designed the logo for the school in 1980, and when he applied for the trademark after the UI abandoned it, the school interfered and kept him from getting it. He wants an accounting, profits from UI's use of the trademark, and the trademark. See the federal complaint.
