LAS VEGAS (CN) - A man who was target shooting in Indian Springs, Nev., says he lost his thumb and finger after picking up a live grenade that detonated in his hand. The grenade was stamped with the words "U.S. Government," the man claims in Clark County Court.
William Walters says he was target shooting in November 2006 when he "saw an object on the ground and picked it up only to realize it was a grenade reading 'U.S. Government' on it."
Walters says he tried to "put the grenade back on the ground, but it detonated in his hand," severing his thumb and finger from his right hand.
He's suing the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Land Management.
"The use of hand grenades in this area is inappropriate because it is an area known or should have been known by defendants to be used ... by residents," the lawsuit states.
He seeks at least $20,000 in damages for negligence and is represented by Benjamin Cloward.
