Majority of States Not|Meeting EPA Deadline

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Environmental Protection Agency has announced a two year deadline for the 29 states that have failed to submit State Implementation Plans.

The plans show how the states plan to meet the 2006 24 Hour National Ambient Air Quality Standards for fine particulate matter under the Clean Air Act.

Specifically, states are required to submit plans that show how the states will mitigate the interstate transport of pollution.

Such plans must address its significant contribution to nonattainment of air quality standards and its interference with maintenance of ambient air quality standards in any neighboring state.

States have three years to submit an implementation plan after the agency issues a new National Ambient Air Quality Standard. If they do not, the EPA develops a federal implementation plan but allows the state two more years to submit its own plan before the federal plan goes into effect.
