Madoff Computer Programmers Charged

MANHATTAN (CN) - Two computer programmers who worked for Bernie Madoff were charged on Wednesday with conspiracy and falsifying records, federal prosecutors said. Jerome O'Hara and George Perez are charged with maintaining programs that generated bogus records that fooled the SEC.

O'Hara, 47, of Malverne, N.Y., and Perez, 44, of East Brunswick, N.J., worked for Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities since the early 1990s, and allegedly pulled the wool over the SEC's sleepy eyes between 2003 and 2008.

If convicted of all charges, they face up to 30 years in prison and millions of dollars in fines.
